A Personalized Landscape Designed for Entertaining, Fitness, and Everyday Living
This New Orleans landscape transformation began with an extensive wish list and a vision for a lush, tropical-inspired outdoor space. The goal was to create a backyard that felt like a private garden retreat while accommodating outdoor entertaining, fitness, and practical everyday needs. By combining thoughtful landscape design, artificial turf, custom planting beds, and repurposed materials, we created a functional outdoor environment that reflects the homeowner’s personal style.
A Tropical Landscape with Personal Touches
Creating a layered, tropical aesthetic was central to the design. Bold foliage, varied textures, and thoughtfully arranged planting beds bring depth and visual interest to the landscape while complementing the home’s architecture.
Preserving meaningful elements of the existing landscape was equally important. The design retained the homeowner’s cherished roses and sweet olive plants, along with the property’s mature live oak tree. These established features provide character and continuity, blending familiar favorites with new tropical-inspired plantings.
Sustainable Landscaping
Through Material Reuse
One of the most distinctive aspects of this project was giving existing materials a second life. Rather than starting from scratch, we incorporated salvaged stone and other materials from the homeowner’s previous property into the new landscape.
Flagstone from the backyard of her former home was reused to create attractive patio and walking areas. Existing river rocks were repurposed to form rain gardens along both sides of the house, helping collect and manage rainwater runoff from downspouts.
Large pieces of salvaged granite were also partially embedded into the ground as natural stepping stones, including one positioned in front of a repurposed bench. These thoughtful details add character while reducing the need for new materials.
This approach demonstrates how sustainable landscape design can combine environmental responsibility with a personalized, cohesive outdoor aesthetic.
Artificial Turf Designed for Outdoor Fitness
The backyard needed to accommodate more than entertaining. The homeowner also envisioned an outdoor gym, making durability and versatility essential to the design.
Artificial turf provided an attractive, low-maintenance lawn surface that could support outdoor workouts, including sled pushing, while offering cushioning for dropped weights. Its consistent appearance also complements the surrounding planting beds and stone features, creating a clean, green space for both recreation and relaxation.

Rain Gardens & Thoughtful Water Management
Incorporating existing river rocks into rain gardens added both visual interest and practical value. Positioned along either side of the house, these features help collect and manage runoff from the roof's downspouts while creating natural-looking transitions between the home and surrounding landscape.
Integrating drainage considerations into the overall landscape plan helps ensure that functional elements contribute to the beauty of the finished design.
Landscape Lighting & Irrigation for Lasting Enjoyment
Irrigation and landscape lighting were integrated throughout the property to support the health, usability, and appearance of the landscape.
The backyard lighting was particularly important because the surrounding area has limited street lighting. Strategically placed outdoor lighting helps illuminate the yard after dark, making the space more inviting and practical for evening gatherings and outdoor activities.
The irrigation system supports the landscape plantings, helping maintain the lush, tropical look that defines the project.
