Dwarf Yaupon Holly: A Great Boxwood Alternative

2 min read

For years, boxwoods have been a go-to plant for creating clean, formal hedges throughout Greater New Orleans. Unfortunately, we’ve seen more and more established boxwoods struggling with boxwood dieback and other disease issues, leaving homeowners with thinning, declining, or completely dead plants.

At Garden Gates Landscape Company, one of our favorite alternatives is Dwarf Yaupon Holly (Ilex vomitoria ‘Nana’).

Why We Love Dwarf Yaupon Holly

Dwarf Yaupon offers much of the classic look homeowners love about boxwoods while being particularly well suited to our South Louisiana climate. Once established, it is a tough, adaptable evergreen that handles our heat and humidity extremely well.

It can also be maintained as a neat, formal hedge or allowed to grow a little more naturally for a softer landscape. Its small evergreen leaves provide year-round structure, making it a great choice for foundation plantings, borders, low hedges, and traditional New Orleans gardens.

What About the Cost?

Replacing an existing boxwood hedge with Dwarf Yaupon can mean a larger upfront investment, especially when removing established plants and installing appropriately sized replacements. However, we believe the long-term benefits can make that investment worthwhile.

Rather than repeatedly treating or replacing declining boxwoods, homeowners can transition to a plant that is naturally well adapted to our region and can provide a beautiful, dependable hedge for years to come.

See What One Growing Season Can Do

One of the best things about Dwarf Yaupon is how nicely it fills in once established. The photos included with this post show how these plants have developed after just one planting season. With proper installation, irrigation, fertilization, and pruning, a new planting can begin developing into a full, established-looking hedge surprisingly quickly.

If your boxwoods are beginning to decline or you’re considering a more reliable alternative for your landscape, Dwarf Yaupon Holly may be worth the switch.
