As colder weather approaches, it's essential to prepare your irrigation system for the possibility of freezing temperatures. Without proper protection, exposed pipes, valves, and other components can be damaged, leading to costly repairs.
Faucet Y & Pressure Vacuum Breaker
Before you begin, it's important to identify the type of irrigation system you have. There are two basic systems most homeowners use:
Faucet Y System In this system, a faucet is connected to a PVC pipe that then branches off to the valves controlling your irrigation zones. This is often a simpler and more common setup for residential properties.
Pressure Vacuum Breaker System The Pressure Vacuum Breaker (PVB) system uses a bell-shaped piece attached to your water main to prevent backflow and maintain water pressure. This system is typically used in areas where backflow prevention is a concern.
If you're unsure which system you have, take a look at your irrigation setup. Watch the helpful videos below to get a closer look at each type.

When to Turn Your System Back On
Once the freeze warning has passed, you can begin the process of turning your system back on. Make sure to:
Inspect for damage before restarting the system.
Gradually turn the water supply back on and check for any leaks or issues.
Test your system to make sure all valves are working properly and that water is flowing smoothly to each zone.
