Creating a Functional Outdoor Entertaining Space
This New Orleans landscape project was designed to create a more functional and inviting outdoor space for entertaining while adding much-needed parking and definition to the property.
The homeowners wanted to make better use of their backyard and create additional outdoor living space for gatherings with family and friends. To accomplish this, we incorporated paver patios and walkways, creating a durable, attractive surface that seamlessly connects the home to the surrounding landscape.
Expanding the Outdoor Entertainment Space
The addition of pavers gave the homeowners more room to entertain outdoors while providing a defined area for furniture, gatherings, and everyday enjoyment. The paver installation also helped create a visual transition between the home, driveway, parking areas, and surrounding landscape.
Beyond aesthetics, the project was designed with functionality in mind. Additional paved parking areas were added to provide more parking while clearly defining where vehicles should be positioned. This transformed an otherwise undefined area into an organized and purposeful part of the property.
Designing Around a Mature Tree
One of the property's most distinctive features was a large mature tree in the backyard. Rather than working against the existing tree, the landscape design was created around it, making it a natural focal point of the space.The tree provides structure, shade, and character while anchoring the surrounding planting beds. The landscape was carefully planned to complement the tree and take advantage of the heavier shade conditions throughout the backyard.
Shade-Tolerant Landscaping with a Tropical Feel
To create the lush, tropical atmosphere the homeowners envisioned, we selected plants that perform well in the property's shaded conditions. Layers of greenery add texture and depth while helping the backyard feel like a private garden retreat.Bamboo was strategically incorporated throughout the landscape to provide additional privacy without making the space feel enclosed. Its vertical form adds height and movement while reinforcing the tropical aesthetic.The combination of mature trees, shade-loving plants, bamboo, and carefully defined hardscape areas creates a landscape that feels both relaxed and intentional.
Defined Driveway & Parking Areas
The driveway and parking areas were upgraded with pavers to improve both appearance and functionality. Because the property needed additional parking, it was important to clearly define individual parking spaces while maintaining a cohesive look throughout the landscape. The result is a more organized arrival area that provides practical parking without sacrificing the property's curb appeal.
